Gloria Trevi sues major TV network, Talk show host and others
By Julia Sullivan
McAllen, TX, April 14, 2009: International superstar Gloria Trevi is protecting her family; more than a decade after a smear campaign lead to years of imprisonment for charges for which she was eventually acquitted.
During a news conference to announce that she is suing TV Azteca, Azteca America, Patricia Chapoy and others for defamation, business disparagement, tortious interference, and civil conspiracy, Trevi, 41, said she was forced to take action when the attacks began targeting her family.
“As a mother, I will do everything in my power to protect my children,” she said today at the office of her lawyer Raymond L. Thomas.
The news conference will be the only time she speaks of the proceedings until the lawsuit is resolved, she said.
“For more than 10 years, I have been the target of a vicious scandal fabricated by those who have sought to destroy me,” Trevi said. “Although I have been subjected to unspeakable acts, including being falsely imprisoned for five years, my faith enabled me to endure. When I was finally exonerated of all charges, I thought the nightmare was over. But the attacks have started up again. Only this time they’re targeting my family.”
Thomas, a partner in the law firm Kittleman, Thomas and Gonzales, LLP, said open season on Trevi is over.
“Even though Gloria Trevi was fully exonerated by the Mexican and the Brazilian legal systems, the targeted attacks against her, and now her family, continue. Gloria told me enough is enough,” Thomas said.
He said Trevi was at the top of her profession when she became the target of rumors and innuendo.
“When I asked Gloria how she managed to rise from the ashes, Gloria said it was her faith in God. She said, ‘My faith gave me hope, even in the face of unspeakable suffering,’” Thomas said.
The law suit, that charges TV Azteca, Azteca America, Patricia Chapoy, and others, for defamation, business disparagement, tortious interference, and civil conspiracy, is pending in the ___ District Court of Hidalgo County, Texas.
